# Filling information requested in field placeholders

When the signer reaches the document, all **field placeholders configured by the initiator** become visible and active for interaction.

* **Pre-filled fields**
  * Certain fields such as **Name** may be automatically populated based on the signer’s account details.
  * **Date fields** are auto-filled with the **current signing date** by default.
  * Pre-filled values remain editable.
* **User-entered fields**
  * Fields for which information is not already available (for example, Designation or other custom inputs) must be manually filled by the signer.
  * The signer can directly click into these fields and enter the required information.
* **Mandatory field enforcement**
  * Fields marked as **mandatory** by the initiator must be completed before proceeding.
  * If any mandatory field is left empty, the signer cannot move forward to complete the signing process.

This ensures that all required information is accurately captured before the document progresses to the next step in the signing workflow.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://support.emsigner.com/initiate-and-sign-envelopes/signing-a-document/as-an-internal-user/filling-information-requested-in-field-placeholders.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
